Devils Tower National Monument

Crook County, WY

Nothing outstanding in the next 14 nights. Monday September 21 is the least compromised.

From someone who guides here

Roads. The road surface is pretty good. Wildlife roams, so be careful.

Gate. Nobody is on duty at the gate.

Parking. A vehicle can sit overnight only in a registered campsite at the Belle Fourche River Campground. Overnight parking is not permitted in the visitor center or trailhead lots.

Cell signal. It works, but it is very weak.

Getting there

This is an area, not a spot. Every figure on this page is computed at Joyner Ridge, which is the spot inside the monument the park itself points stargazers to. The monument is small, so the sky over the rest of it is much the same, but the horizon and the terrain are the ridge.

The sky from here. Joyner Ridge, which the Park Service names as the best place to stargaze in the monument: wide open, little light pollution, and the Tower in view. This is the Park Service's assessment and not a visit by anyone from this site.

The southern sky is open here. The land to the south rises no more than 0.5 degrees, and the Milky Way core reaches 16.4, so it clears the ground by about 15.9 degrees at its highest.

Computed from elevation data, 16 directions sampled out to 19 miles and corrected for the curve of the Earth. Site elevation 4,557 feet, worst southern angle 0.5 degrees. ⚠️ This is arithmetic, not a visit. It knows the shape of the land and nothing about a locked gate, a security light or where a car can actually stop. The nearest sample sits 820 feet out, so a treeline at the edge of a clearing does not register in it at all, and at a wooded site that is the thing most likely to be wrong.

Finding a spot. Beyond the spot named above, what decides a good one is a clear view low to the south, because the Milky Way core and most of the season's best targets sit low in the southern sky. From this latitude the core never climbs higher than about 16 degrees, roughly a fist and a half held at arm's length above the horizon, so a ridge or a treeline to the south takes it away entirely. An ordinary parking area with an open southern horizon beats a named viewpoint with a ridge in the way.

Two other things matter as much and are easier to judge on arrival: whether headlights sweep the spot as cars pass, and whether there is a light left on somewhere that no map records. Local knowledge is welcome from anyone who knows a place well.

Joyner Ridge is reached from the entrance station by taking the park road about 2 miles, turning left onto the signed gravel road, following it about 0.3 miles, then turning right into a small gravel parking area. The parking area is unpaved but fairly level. RVs and motorcycles are not recommended on the gravel road. Visiting at night to hike or stargaze is permitted, but parking or camping overnight at Joyner Ridge is not. The Joyner Ridge Trail is a 1.5-mile loop, is not maintained in winter, and commonly holds packed snow and ice from December through April.

Where to stop. Go to Joyner Ridge. It is the spot the Park Service itself points stargazers to, it is a short drive from the entrance station, and the directions are in the access notes below.

Iconic foreground for astrophotography.

How dark is it? Not measured. Nobody has published a sky-brightness reading for the monument that this site can point at. What is objective is that the nearest town of any size is 80 miles away.
